Sioux Falls, SD – A powerful weather system will move across South Dakota this weekend, bringing widespread rain before transitioning to accumulating snow late Saturday into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, rainfall totals between 0.5 and 1.5 inches are expected across much of eastern South Dakota, including cities such as Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Brookings. The heaviest precipitation is forecast to occur Saturday, with snow becoming more likely Saturday night into early Sunday. Areas like Miller and Canby, MN, face the highest chance—up to 73%—of receiving more than 2 inches of snow.

Communities in southeastern South Dakota, including Yankton and Vermillion, will see lower snow probabilities, hovering around 10% or less. Northwestern Iowa and northeastern Nebraska should expect only light rain, with minimal snow risk.

Drivers should prepare for reduced visibility, slick roads, and changing travel conditions overnight Saturday. Residents are advised to monitor updates, as even a slight shift in the storm track could significantly impact where the heaviest snow develops.

The storm system will exit the region by late Sunday, but lingering breezy winds and cooler temperatures may persist into early next week.
