Sioux Falls, SD – Strong winds and dropping temperatures will dominate South Dakota’s weather early this week, with snow chances returning Tuesday night. Gusts of 45–50 mph are expected today west of I-29, followed by flurries and freezing conditions through midweek.
According to the National Weather Service, today’s high will peak near 35°F before temperatures drop rapidly. A cold front moving across the region will usher in winds of 20–30 mph throughout the day, with gusts up to 45 mph. By Tuesday, slightly calmer winds and highs near 32°F will accompany scattered snow showers, potentially leaving isolated accumulations of up to 0.5 inches by Wednesday morning.
Travelers along I-29 should exercise caution today and tomorrow, especially with gusty conditions reducing visibility and icy patches likely by midweek. Commuters should also prepare for single-digit wind chills on Wednesday as arctic air continues to settle over the region.
Looking ahead, below-normal temperatures will dominate through Friday, with daytime highs ranging from 11°F to 28°F and overnight lows dipping to 9°F by midweek. While Thursday and Friday are expected to remain mostly dry, any moisture could quickly freeze on roadways.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items vulnerable to high winds today and monitor updated forecasts for changing snow conditions. Keep winter gear on hand and plan ahead for possible travel delays.
