Sioux Falls, S.D. – Damaging winds and large hail are possible across southeastern South Dakota starting Wednesday afternoon, with the threat continuing into Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are likely, especially between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening. Storms could bring wind gusts up to 70 mph and ping pong ball-sized hail. The highest local risk areas include Yankton, Sioux Falls, and Sheldon, where strong storms may develop both afternoons.
Today’s primary risks are hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall. Thursday’s setup looks similar, with isolated severe storms possible again. Much of the region—including Worthington, Spencer, Brookings, and Windom—is under a Marginal Risk (Level 1) for severe weather.
Drivers should stay alert for rapidly changing conditions and be prepared for sudden downpours or wind damage. Secure outdoor items, charge devices in advance, and avoid travel during active storms if possible.
This pattern may persist into Thursday evening. Additional advisories or warnings could be issued as the system evolves.
