Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across southeastern South Dakota starting after 3 p.m. Monday, bringing dangerous winds, hail, and the risk of localized flooding into the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Level 2 (Slight) risk for both excessive rainfall and severe weather is in effect until 10 p.m. Areas from Sioux Falls to Yankton and Sioux City could see storms producing wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter. The heaviest storms may “train” over the same locations, dropping 2 to 4 inches of rain in short bursts—especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Cities including O’Neill, Norfolk, and Spencer also face a chance of urban flooding and isolated storm damage. Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and prepare for sudden visibility drops during heavy downpours.
The threat diminishes by late evening as the system moves southeast, but additional advisories may follow depending on overnight developments. Residents are urged to monitor alerts and avoid travel during peak storm activity.
