Sioux Falls, SD – South Dakotans are bracing for plunging temperatures as wind chills drop below zero starting Sunday night, with gusty northwest winds making outdoor conditions hazardous. Light snow is also expected east of I-29 through Monday, though accumulations will remain under an inch.

According to the National Weather Service, the high on Monday will only reach 12°F in Sioux Falls, with wind chills hovering near -20°F during the overnight hours. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions along I-29 and local roadways. Residents should bundle up if venturing outside and secure loose items to prevent wind damage.

Monday night temperatures will plummet to around -4°F with lighter winds from the north. By Tuesday, sunny skies will return with highs near 17°F, but the bitter cold will persist during the early morning hours.

The good news: relief is on the way. Temperatures will climb steadily midweek, reaching the upper 30s on Wednesday and low 40s by Thursday under mostly sunny skies. Despite the improvement, early mornings will still be chilly, with lows in the 20s.

Drivers should remain cautious on roadways, particularly near open fields where strong winds may create localized visibility issues. Use extra care if traveling at night when temperatures are lowest.

Stay updated on changing conditions and prepare for a brief but intense cold snap. Warmer days are expected later in the week, offering some respite from the Arctic chill.
