Sioux Falls, SD – A cold front sweeping through South Dakota is expected to bring snow flurries and plummeting temperatures Sunday, primarily affecting areas north of I-90. Residents are urged to prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures starting Sunday evening, as well as potential travel hazards.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Sunday’s high will hover near 41 degrees, but gusty northwest winds will make it feel significantly colder. Patchy fog is likely during the morning, with snow flurries possible in the afternoon. Lows will dip into the low 20s by nightfall, creating the potential for icy conditions on roadways, especially bridges and overpasses.
On Monday, daytime highs will only reach 33 degrees, accompanied by brisk winds gusting up to 25 mph. Nighttime lows are expected to plunge into the low teens, marking some of the coldest conditions of the season so far.
The cold snap continues Tuesday and Wednesday, with mostly sunny skies but highs struggling to exceed the mid-30s. Thanksgiving Day offers slightly warmer conditions, with highs near 40 degrees and partly cloudy skies, ideal for holiday travel or outdoor celebrations.
Travelers and residents should prepare for winter weather by keeping an emergency kit in their vehicles and monitoring road conditions, particularly along I-90. The South Dakota Department of Transportation advises checking weather updates frequently and driving cautiously as icy patches could develop quickly.
Be sure to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and ensure your home heating systems are working efficiently.
