Sioux Falls, SD – Residents and holiday travelers in South Dakota should brace for a significant drop in temperatures as Arctic air grips the region this week. Thanksgiving Day will see highs in the mid-20s, but by Thursday night, wind chills could plummet to 10 below zero.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Tuesday will offer the warmest day of the week, with highs nearing 37 degrees under mostly sunny skies. A breezy northwest wind will make it feel cooler. By Wednesday, temperatures will begin to drop, with highs in the low 30s. Spotty snow flurries are possible, especially in northern areas of the state.
Thanksgiving will be dry but cold, with a high near 26 degrees. Those traveling along I-90 or into neighboring states should prepare for early-morning wind chills near zero. Bitterly cold air arrives Thursday night into Friday, when highs will struggle to reach 22 degrees. Wind chills on Friday morning could fall to between 5 and 10 below zero.
Residents are urged to dress in layers and limit time outdoors, particularly in the early mornings when the cold will be most intense. Travelers should check road conditions and weather updates frequently, especially if driving north or south where snow chances increase.
