Strong winds are sweeping across South Dakota today, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, creating hazardous conditions. A Wind Advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. for areas west of the James River, including regions near I-90. Residents should secure loose outdoor items and use caution while driving, especially if operating high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service, sustained northwest winds of 20-30 mph will persist through Monday afternoon, with the strongest gusts occurring along the James River corridor. Minor structural damage, tree branches breaking, and powerline issues are possible. Drivers on I-90 should allow extra room for high-profile vehicles, as gusty winds may cause instability.
The weather will calm slightly by Monday evening, but cold air will settle in. By Tuesday, temperatures will drop significantly, and there’s a 40% chance of snow developing overnight into Wednesday morning. Sioux Falls is expected to see a high near 30 on Tuesday, but snow showers could lead to slippery road conditions.
The week ahead brings even colder air, with Wednesday’s high forecasted at 14 degrees and lows plummeting to -2 overnight. Drivers are advised to check forecasts regularly and prepare vehicles for winter weather.
