Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Golf ball-sized hail and 70 mph winds could sweep across southeast South Dakota by Monday evening, with U.S. 81 directly in the crosshairs.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Level 2 of 5 severe weather risk is in place for Monday, July 7, affecting central and southeast South Dakota. The strongest storms are expected between 4 p.m. and midnight, especially along the U.S. Highway 81 corridor, where large hail and damaging winds may develop. While a tornado isn’t the primary concern, an isolated one cannot be ruled out.

Storms are expected to move east through the evening and gradually weaken overnight. Residents should charge devices, secure outdoor items, and remain indoors during the peak weather window. Lightning remains a hazard even outside the core of stronger storms.

More storm activity is possible later in the week, particularly Thursday into Friday, with a chance for additional strong to severe development. Forecast models remain uncertain, but residents should stay weather-aware.
