Sioux Falls, SD — A potentially dangerous storm system is expected to sweep through South Dakota on Thursday, bringing with it two rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms that could disrupt travel, damage property, and impact daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the first round of storms is forecast between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday. These early morning storms may produce hail up to 1 inch in diameter. A second and more intense wave is expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., bringing a higher threat of large hail — up to half-dollar size — and damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

The risk is highest in southeastern South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Yankton, and surrounding counties. The Storm Prediction Center has placed this region under a Level 2 (Slight Risk) on its five-level scale for severe weather potential.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and have multiple ways to receive alerts — especially during overnight and afternoon hours when storms are most likely to hit. Stay indoors if warnings are issued and avoid travel during peak storm times.

This storm system follows a stretch of quieter weather but reflects South Dakota’s increasing storm activity typical for mid-April.
