Sioux Falls, SD – Winds topping 45 mph are expected to impact travel and outdoor plans across South Dakota through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Sunday, with gusts strongest along the I-29 corridor. Northwest winds from 20 to 30 mph will continue throughout the day, creating hazardous driving conditions and elevated fire risks. Motorists—especially those in high-profile vehicles—should avoid open roads or use extreme caution.

Strong winds are forecast to taper off late Sunday evening, paving the way for a more stable start to the workweek. Monday will be mostly cloudy with highs in the mid-50s. Winds should calm to 5 mph, allowing safer travel and outdoor activities.

Looking ahead, spring-like warmth begins midweek. Highs will climb from the 50s Tuesday to the low 70s by Friday. Tuesday brings sunshine and breezy conditions with wind speeds increasing up to 20 mph by afternoon. Wednesday and Thursday continue the warming trend, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 60s and 70s. By Friday, rain returns with a 50% chance of showers late in the day.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items today and delay any controlled burns due to wind-driven fire hazards. With warming temps on the horizon, this week marks a shift from winter’s final grip into a spring-like pattern.
