Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes threaten communities along and east of I-29 Monday afternoon, prompting urgent weather alerts through 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, an Enhanced to Moderate risk (levels 3–4 of 5) covers much of eastern South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Watertown, and Brookings, with storms expected to erupt between 3 and 8 p.m. Monday. Thunderstorms capable of producing hail over two inches, 70 mph wind gusts, and isolated tornadoes will be most likely in counties bordering the Minnesota line, including Minnehaha, Lincoln, and Roberts.

Travel along I-29, U.S. Highway 14, and area county roads could be hazardous during peak evening hours. Residents in Alexandria, Mitchell, and Chamberlain may see strong storms, but severe risks drop off west of the James River Valley. Storm chances for central and western areas will depend on the timing of the approaching front.

Emergency officials urge South Dakotans to secure outdoor items, keep devices charged, and review tornado shelter plans ahead of rapidly changing weather. Hail damage and scattered power outages are possible.

Severe weather warnings remain in effect until 8 p.m. Monday, with more updates possible if the front slows or intensifies.
