Sioux Falls, S.D. –Drivers across eastern South Dakota faced reduced visibility early Thursday as patchy fog settled into river valleys and low-lying areas, creating dangerous travel conditions during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, fog developed overnight and was reported in areas near the Big Sioux River, especially along I-29 and rural highways. The agency urged drivers to slow down, keep headlights on, and avoid distractions until the fog lifts.
Communities including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton saw early morning visibility drop to less than a quarter mile in some areas. The fog is expected to dissipate gradually by 9 a.m. as sunlight warms the surface.
Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, particularly on bridges, near school zones, and in areas with limited street lighting. Allow extra travel time and increase following distance to prevent collisions.
This type of early morning fog is common during late spring, especially when humid conditions follow clear overnight skies. Although short-lived, it can pose significant hazards during rush hour.
Visibility is expected to improve mid-morning Thursday, but additional updates may follow if low-lying areas remain affected.
