Sioux Falls, SD – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for several counties in South Dakota, with critical fire weather conditions expected from noon to 7 p.m. CST on Tuesday. Strong winds and low humidity levels will significantly increase the risk of rapidly spreading wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, the affected areas include Gregory, Jerauld, Sanborn, Brule, Aurora, Davison, Hanson, Charles Mix, Douglas, Hutchinson, Bon Homme, Lyman, and Buffalo counties. Winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Humidity levels will drop as low as 20 to 25 percent.

The combination of strong winds, dry air, and warm temperatures can lead to extreme fire behavior. Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Any fire that ignites could spread quickly and become difficult to contain.

Residents are advised to monitor local alerts and follow fire safety guidelines. Fire officials recommend securing outdoor equipment, avoiding activities that produce sparks, and being prepared to act quickly if a fire breaks out.

The Red Flag Warning will remain in effect until 7 p.m. CST. Residents should stay informed and take necessary precautions to reduce fire risks in the affected areas.
