Aberdeen, SD – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for much of South Dakota from noon MDT (1 p.m. CDT) until 8 p.m. MDT (9 p.m. CDT) Thursday due to gusty winds and low humidity, creating critical fire weather conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, Buffalo, Custer County Plains, Pine Ridge, Haakon County, Badlands, Bennett County, Mellette and Todd Counties, and Tripp County. Winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 15 to 18 percent.

Officials warn that any fires that ignite could spread quickly and become difficult to control. Residents and landowners are urged to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions to prevent accidental fires. Strong winds combined with dry fuels and warm temperatures could lead to extreme fire behavior.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until Thursday evening, and conditions may persist depending on weather patterns. Residents should stay informed through local updates and follow any fire restrictions in place.
