Sioux Falls, SD — A large swath of South Dakota will face increased fire danger Saturday afternoon as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 1 to 8 p.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, the warning covers much of central and south-central South Dakota, including Beadle, Gregory, Brule, Davison, Charles Mix, Hughes, Stanley, and surrounding counties. The warning was issued due to expected strong winds and low humidity, creating conditions that could lead to rapid fire spread.
South to southwest winds are forecast to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts peaking near 35 mph. Relative humidity could drop as low as 19 percent, significantly increasing fire danger throughout the region.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with any equipment that could generate sparks. “Any fire that develops will spread quickly,” the NWS warned.
Residents in areas like Yankton, Bon Homme, and Lyman counties should stay alert for changing weather conditions and follow local fire safety guidance. These warnings come as spring conditions dry out landscapes faster than usual for March.
Stay updated through local alerts and postpone any outdoor activities that involve open flames or flammable materials.
