Pierre, SD – South Dakota residents are bracing for critical fire weather as a strong cold front pushes through the Central and Northern Plains. Dangerous conditions are expected to last into Monday evening.
The National Weather Service has warned that winds of 20-30 mph and extremely low humidity, dropping to as low as 15%, could rapidly spread any wildfires. Central South Dakota, particularly south-central areas, is at heightened risk due to very dry vegetation, classified as ERC fuels, which are above the 98th percentile for dryness.
The cold front will continue advancing through the region, potentially affecting areas near the upper Mississippi River Valley as it moves east. According to the NWS, residents should avoid using outdoor fire pits, burning trash, or operating equipment that could generate sparks. The public is advised to take all necessary precautions to prevent unintentional fires.
