South Dakota – Drivers across South Dakota are being warned of hazardous travel conditions this week as dense fog, snow, and strong winds are expected to impact the region.
According to the National Weather Service, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until late Sunday morning with visibility dropping to less than half a mile. Areas of freezing fog could lead to slick or icy roads, particularly on untreated surfaces. Drivers are urged to slow down, use headlights, and leave extra stopping distance.
Looking ahead to Monday, strong westerly winds with gusts up to 40 mph will sweep across the area, potentially impacting travel on major routes like Interstate 90. Tuesday brings the next chance for measurable snowfall, with accumulations primarily north of I-90 and extending into southwestern Minnesota. Winds could lead to blowing snow, further reducing visibility during the afternoon commute.
Temperatures are expected to hover near freezing on Monday with a high of 38°F, before plummeting into the single digits overnight into Tuesday. Daytime highs on Tuesday will reach only the low 30s, with wind chills making it feel much colder. By Wednesday, skies are forecast to clear, but temperatures will struggle to rise above 20°F, marking a cold midweek stretch.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates closely, especially if travel plans are involved. The combination of dense fog, icy conditions, and blowing snow could pose challenges for both drivers and pedestrians. Those commuting during peak hours should plan for extra travel time and remain vigilant on the roads.
For the remainder of the week, conditions will stabilize, with dry but frigid weather continuing through Wednesday and Thursday.
