Sioux Falls, SD – A blast of arctic air is bringing dangerously low wind chills to South Dakota tonight, with values dropping as low as -20°F. Residents across the region are urged to limit outdoor exposure and take precautions to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

According to the National Weather Service, frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Overnight lows are expected to reach -6°F, with wind speeds up to 10 mph creating life-threatening cold. Areas along the I-29 corridor, including Brookings and Watertown, will experience the harshest conditions, lasting into Wednesday morning.

The frigid temperatures are accompanied by clear skies, providing no insulation from the bitter cold. Wednesday will see some improvement, with highs climbing to 12°F and calmer winds. However, another cold night is forecast, with temperatures dropping to 5°F by evening.

By Thursday, a warmer trend is expected, with highs nearing 39°F, providing brief relief before another cold front sweeps in over the weekend. Drivers are reminded to keep emergency kits in their vehicles, as car batteries are particularly vulnerable in subzero conditions.

Local authorities advise staying indoors if possible, bundling up in layers, and ensuring pets are protected from the cold. Check on elderly neighbors and take steps to prevent frozen pipes by allowing faucets to drip.

Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
