Sioux Falls, SD – A powerful winter storm is set to impact South Dakota and southwest Minnesota late Friday night through Saturday evening, bringing strong winds, snow, and possible ice accumulation. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of the region, warning of hazardous travel conditions and the potential for blizzard-like conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, areas including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Huron could experience wind gusts up to 60 mph, combined with light snow and ice accumulations. Southwest Minnesota, including Marshall and Pipestone, may see slightly lower gusts up to 50 mph, making travel dangerous due to reduced visibility from blowing snow.

Meanwhile, the Aberdeen area and portions of northeast South Dakota could receive between 1 to 4 inches of snow, with some localized higher amounts. Ice accumulation of up to one-tenth of an inch is also possible, increasing the risk of power outages and downed tree branches.

Officials urge residents to prepare for hazardous road conditions and consider delaying travel. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit, including blankets, food, and water. The storm is expected to subside by Saturday evening, but strong winds may continue to impact visibility and road conditions.

Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts and heed any advisories issued by local authorities.
