Aberdeen, SD – May 8, 2025 – A Fire Weather Watch is in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday evening for a large swath of central and northeast South Dakota, as well as parts of western Minnesota. With forecasted winds of 20 to 30 mph, gusting up to 45 mph, combined with relative humidity levels as low as 18-19%, conditions will be ripe for rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, these conditions are expected to be particularly dangerous for outdoor burning activities. Any fires that ignite may quickly spread and become difficult to control.
The affected areas in Minnesota include Traverse and Big Stone counties, while in South Dakota, the alert extends over counties like Brown, Marshall, Roberts, Edmunds, Day, and more. These conditions could lead to heightened wildfire risks and challenges for first responders.
Residents in these areas are urged to avoid outdoor burning, exercise caution around any open flames, and stay aware of local fire safety updates. A Red Flag Warning may be issued in the coming days, so be prepared for evolving conditions.
Stay tuned for further updates from the National Weather Service as the situation develops.
