Louisville, Kentucky – Gusty winds and large hail could sweep across south-central Kentucky Thursday afternoon as a round of strong to severe storms develops, prompting a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) designation for the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, a Marginal Risk (1 out of 5) remains in place for much of the state, but the highest concerns are centered on the Bowling Green, Somerset, and London areas. Storms are expected between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. EDT, with the main threats being damaging wind gusts and pockets of hail. While the tornado potential remains low, forecasters caution that an isolated spin-up can’t be completely ruled out.
Cities like Elizabethtown, Richmond, and Corbin should prepare for brief periods of intense rainfall, dangerous lightning, and possible localized flooding. All thunderstorms carry the risk of downed limbs or power lines, especially in areas already dealing with saturated ground. Residents are urged to charge mobile devices, stay indoors during storms, and avoid travel if winds intensify.
Storm activity should taper off gradually overnight, with clearer skies returning by early Friday. Additional weather statements may be issued if conditions escalate.
