According to the National Weather Service, rain and sleet will begin transitioning to freezing rain this afternoon, with temperatures hovering near 31°F by evening. Ice accumulations exceeding a quarter inch are forecast, particularly in Lancaster, Kershaw, and Fairfield counties. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution on highways, as icy conditions will worsen overnight.
The weekend will bring relief as skies clear by Saturday afternoon. Highs will climb to 46°F on Saturday, with calm winds and dry conditions persisting through Monday. Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny with highs reaching 45°F. However, temperatures will remain chilly, with lows dipping into the 20s overnight.
Residents should prepare for possible power outages by charging devices and stocking essential supplies. Avoid parking vehicles under trees, as ice-laden branches could fall. Travelers are encouraged to delay plans until conditions improve Saturday afternoon.
