Columbia, SC – Strong winds and dropping temperatures will sweep across central South Carolina today as a cold front moves through. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Wind Advisory from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., with gusts expected to reach 30 mph.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory affects areas in the northern Midlands and Pee Dee region, creating hazardous conditions for small craft on lakes. Residents near Lake Murray and Lake Marion are urged to exercise caution if boating and secure outdoor items that could be blown away.

This afternoon may also see graupel—soft, hail-like pellets—across parts of the region due to the very cold air aloft. While precipitation will be brief and scattered, downdrafts may carry graupel to the ground despite temperatures remaining above freezing.

Looking ahead, the weekend brings calmer, clearer skies, with daytime highs in the low 50s and nighttime lows dropping into the mid-20s. Saturday is expected to be sunny, while Sunday remains chilly but pleasant with highs near 46. Winds will lighten by Saturday morning, creating more favorable conditions for outdoor activities.

Temperatures early next week will continue to hover below seasonal norms. Monday’s high is forecasted at 48 degrees, with a low around 28 degrees, but skies will remain clear and dry.

For those traveling over the weekend, ensure vehicles are winter-ready and monitor updates for changing conditions. Small craft operators are advised to avoid lake activities during the advisory period.

Stay tuned to local forecasts for updates, and prioritize safety as South Carolina transitions to winter weather.
