Columbia, SC – A wintry mix of freezing rain and ice could impact areas along and west of I-20 this Friday night. Residents should prepare for potential icy roads and power disruptions as temperatures drop and precipitation increases late in the day.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia, a storm system from the Gulf of Mexico will bring moisture into the region starting Friday afternoon. While rain is likely for much of the area, freezing rain and ice accumulation are possible in locations where temperatures hover near freezing, particularly along and north of I-20.

Forecasters warn that even a light glaze of ice could make roads treacherous and pose risks to trees and power lines. Drivers are urged to use caution, especially during the Friday evening commute and overnight hours into Saturday. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and monitor local road conditions closely.

Temperatures will recover by Saturday, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 48°F expected. The extended forecast for Columbia shows continued dry and sunny conditions through Sunday, with highs in the mid-40s and lows in the mid-20s.

Stay tuned for updates from the NWS as the forecast evolves. Be sure to plan ahead and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this winter weather event.
