Columbia, SC – A cold front sweeping through South Carolina today is bringing strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall to the Columbia area. Residents should prepare for wind gusts up to 35 mph and hazardous driving and boating conditions throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), showers and thunderstorms will persist through early afternoon before tapering off. Winds from the south will shift westward, with speeds reaching 25 mph. A Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday, warning boaters of choppy waters and increased risks of capsized small craft.

Drivers should exercise caution on highways, especially near open stretches such as I-77 and I-20, where crosswinds could create challenges. Rainfall totals of up to one inch are expected, with localized flooding possible in low-lying areas. By Wednesday evening, temperatures will plummet to 32°F, ushering in a cold and clear night.

Looking ahead, Thursday will bring sunny skies with calmer conditions and a high near 54°F. Friday and Saturday will remain mostly clear, with highs in the upper 50s to 60°F and lows in the 30s. However, showers may return late Saturday night, impacting weekend plans.

Residents should secure outdoor objects, avoid boating during peak winds, and monitor weather updates throughout the day.
