Greenville, SC – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of Upstate South Carolina as dry air, gusty winds, and low humidity create dangerous fire conditions on Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, the warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT Saturday across numerous counties, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Cherokee, Laurens, and York. Winds from the west are expected to reach 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, while relative humidity could drop to 15 percent, significantly increasing fire risk.
The alert also includes areas of northeast Georgia and the western North Carolina Piedmont, though counties along the Tennessee-North Carolina border are exempt due to light snowfall earlier this week, which reduced local fire danger.
Officials strongly advise against any outdoor burning during the warning window. “Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly,” the alert states.
Residents should avoid using equipment that could produce sparks and keep vehicles off dry grass. Emergency responders also recommend having evacuation plans ready in case of rapidly spreading fires.
The weather setup is tied to high pressure over the Deep South combined with a weak cold front, creating unusually dry and breezy March conditions across the region.
