Columbia, South Carolina – Lingering wildfire smoke could create hazy conditions across central South Carolina today, as temperatures climb into the upper 80s with some areas brushing 90 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, Tuesday will bring mostly sunny skies with a veil of smoke aloft, affecting air quality and visibility in parts of the Midlands. Highs are expected to peak near 89° in Augusta, 88° in Columbia, and 87° in both Bamberg and Cheraw.

While the sun dominates much of the day, the smoky haze could pose mild health concerns for sensitive groups. Officials recommend limiting prolonged outdoor activity, especially for children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions. Drivers should also remain alert during early morning hours when low-angle sunlight and haze may reduce visibility on highways such as I-20 and I-26.

This smoke, likely drifting from distant wildfires, isn’t expected to thicken, but conditions may persist through the evening.

More clear skies are expected midweek, though updates will follow if smoke continues to impact air quality.
