Greenville, South Carolina – Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph are likely across the western Carolinas Saturday evening, with severe thunderstorms expected to develop between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m., especially west of I-26.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, confidence is growing that a strong line of storms will sweep through the region starting around 6 p.m. in the mountains near Asheville and Toccoa, reaching Spartanburg, Rock Hill, and Charlotte closer to midnight. A Thunderstorm Watch is in effect, with warnings likely if storms intensify.

The greatest threat zone includes Asheville, Anderson, and Greenwood, where gusty winds could down trees or power lines. Residents heading to lakes or hiking in the mountains are urged to remain alert, as storms may develop rapidly. Outdoor activities should be wrapped up early, and shelter plans reviewed.

Travelers along I-26 and US-25 should be cautious of falling limbs, sudden downpours, and rapidly changing conditions. Charge devices, secure loose outdoor items, and avoid open areas once thunder is heard.

Storms may linger until early Sunday. Additional alerts are possible, and residents should monitor weather updates closely.
