Columbia, South Carolina – Thunderstorms are expected to move into the Columbia metro area Tuesday afternoon, bringing lightning, heavy rain, and potential travel disruptions during peak hours on I-20 and I-26.

According to the National Weather Service, showers and thunderstorms will begin developing after 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 10. Conditions will clear gradually into the evening, but the main threat window includes the late afternoon and early evening commute. Columbia could see a high of 91°F before storms roll in. Winds may reach up to 8 mph with brief gusts inside stronger cells. Rainfall amounts could total up to a quarter inch, with locally higher amounts possible in heavier downpours.

Drivers should avoid flooded intersections, slow down during heavy rain, and remain alert for lightning. Power flickers and brief outages may occur due to wind or lightning strikes on power lines. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and keep mobile devices charged.
