Greenville, S.C. – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across the Carolinas Friday afternoon and evening, potentially bringing damaging winds, hail, and lightning to areas from Greenville to Charlotte.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a cold front pushing through the region will trigger scattered severe storms mainly east of the North Carolina mountains. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of western and central South Carolina and parts of western North Carolina, including Charlotte, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Newton, under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather. Asheville and Greenville sit on the edge of the Level 1 “Marginal Risk” zone.

Cities under the higher threat should prepare for sudden downpours, isolated wind damage, and brief power outages. Travel may be hazardous, especially during the evening commute. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, charge mobile devices, and closely monitor weather alerts. Severe Thunderstorm Watches or Warnings may be issued during peak storm hours.

Storms are expected to weaken after sunset as the front moves east. More updates will follow as conditions evolve. Stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts through Friday night.
