Columbia, S.C. – Hail and strong wind gusts could hit central South Carolina this afternoon as a round of thunderstorms sweeps through the region between 3 and 8 p.m. The National Weather Service has placed much of the Midlands and CSRA under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather.

According to the NWS Columbia office, the primary concerns include damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and scattered hail—especially in areas east of I-20. A brief tornado can’t be ruled out, though it’s not the main threat.

Columbia, Aiken, Orangeburg, and Barnwell are among the cities most at risk. Roads like I-20 and I-26 may see hazardous travel conditions if storms intensify quickly. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and hail could disrupt outdoor activities and late-day commutes.

If you’re heading out this afternoon, charge your phone, stay alert for warning alerts, and be ready to move indoors at the first sign of thunder. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” officials urged.

Storms are expected to weaken after 8 p.m., but additional watches or warnings may be issued. Keep local alerts on and check back for updates from NWS Columbia.
