Columbia, SC — Warm, dry, and windy spring weather across South Carolina has triggered a Red Flag Warning through 8 p.m. Saturday, raising the risk of fast-spreading wildfires from Columbia to Aiken and across the I-20 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, the warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT for the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area. Gusty winds up to 30 mph, low humidity near 20 percent, and temperatures reaching 74°F could rapidly escalate any outdoor fires. Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning of any kind.

The impacted region includes Columbia, Lexington, Richland, Sumter, Aiken, Fairfield, and Orangeburg counties. Dry fuels combined with unseasonably warm spring temperatures make conditions ripe for uncontrolled fire behavior. Drivers on I-20 and nearby roadways should stay alert for potential smoke or emergency crews.

Looking ahead, Sunday brings more spring warmth with sunny skies and a high of 77°F. Monday marks a shift, as showers are likely by midday with a 60% chance of rain and a high of 74°F. Overnight lows remain mild, mostly in the mid-40s to low 50s.

The five-day outlook continues with partly cloudy skies Monday night, another chance of rain, and then clearing midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday will be sunny and mild, with highs near 78°F and 75°F respectively—ideal spring weather following today’s elevated fire risk.

Residents are advised to remain cautious and stay updated through local alerts.
