Charleston, SC – A winter storm blanketed South Carolina, delivering significant snowfall across the region, including up to 4.5 inches in some areas. This rare weather event left residents and officials scrambling to adapt.
According to the National Weather Service Charleston office, snowfall totals ranged from under an inch in some areas to over 4 inches near the coast. The highest recorded snowfall of 4.5 inches was observed in parts of Charleston County. Areas further inland reported accumulations of 2 to 3 inches.
Local authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel due to icy roads and hazardous conditions. Schools and businesses in several counties delayed openings or closed for the day. The weather service warned that lingering cold temperatures could refreeze wet surfaces overnight, leading to additional hazards.
Residents shared photos of snow-covered streets and yards, celebrating the rare winter weather in the Lowcountry. Emergency crews remained on standby to respond to road incidents or power outages.
The storm is part of a larger weather system that impacted the Southeastern United States this week. Officials encourage caution and preparedness as temperatures remain below freezing.
