Columbia, S.C. – Strong storms could slam into central South Carolina this evening, with high winds, lightning, and hail possible across Columbia, Lexington, and surrounding areas until 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for 13 counties, including Richland, Aiken, Orangeburg, and Fairfield. The alert, issued at 6:10 p.m. CDT, warns of damaging wind gusts and the potential for quarter-size hail.

Drivers on I-20, I-26, and Highway 378 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and ponding on roads. Outdoor events and evening commutes in Columbia, Newberry, and Barnwell could be disrupted as cells sweep eastward.

Emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid touching metal objects during lightning, and have weather alerts enabled on mobile devices. Flashlights and backup power are also recommended in case of outages.

The threat is expected to taper after 11 p.m., but the NWS cautions that additional alerts or warnings could follow if storm conditions intensify.
