Myrtle Beach, South Carolina –A powerful thunderstorm over Paradise Reef is kicking up winds near 30 knots off the South Carolina coast Saturday evening, prompting urgent safety warnings for boaters from Little River Inlet to Murrells Inlet.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, NC, Doppler radar spotted the storm at 7:02 p.m., moving east at 25 knots. The storm is capable of producing small hail, lightning, and rough waves in the popular coastal waters just offshore from Myrtle Beach.

Local mariners should expect hazardous conditions, including gusty winds and sudden, higher waves. The NWS urges all boaters to seek safe harbor immediately. If you’re caught on open water, prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions and ensure everyone on board wears a properly fitted life jacket.

Paradise Reef and surrounding areas are at risk for dangerous lightning and strong winds that could escalate. Officials warn a special marine warning may follow if the storm intensifies closer to shore. Consider heading in early and monitoring weather channels for updates.

Hazardous conditions may continue until late Saturday night. More advisories could be issued if the threat persists. Stay alert and check for the latest updates before venturing out.
