Charleston, S.C. – Some of the warmest June overnight temperatures on record are gripping the South Carolina coast Friday night, with lows not expected to drop below 75°F in Charleston and parts of the Lowcountry — and some spots hovering near 80°F.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, these unusually high overnight temperatures, paired with high humidity, pose a major heat risk — especially for individuals without reliable air conditioning or access to hydration. The risk level is classified as “dangerous”, impacting large areas along the coast from Beaufort to Berkeley counties.

The Charleston and Savannah metro areas are under particular threat, with heat indices lingering well above safe levels throughout the night. Urban zones and inland coastal counties, including Colleton and Jasper, may see limited cooling due to retained daytime heat.

Officials urge residents to stay in cool spaces, drink water frequently, and check on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and unhoused populations. “Even at night, this level of heat can lead to serious health risks,” NWS Charleston said in a statement.

Major heat concerns remain through early Saturday, with further advisories possible if extreme conditions persist into the weekend.
