Columbia, SC – A powerful line of storms is sweeping across South Carolina and Georgia, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for millions through 7 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, damaging straight-line winds up to 70 mph are likely across central and northern Georgia, western and central South Carolina, and parts of western North Carolina. The watch, issued late Monday morning, also warns of isolated large hail up to 1 inch in diameter and the potential for a brief tornado.
The affected area spans roughly 115 miles east and west of a line from north of Greenville, SC, to just south of Macon, GA. Cities including Atlanta, Augusta, Columbia, and Greenville are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing weather conditions as a squall line moves through the region.
Travel delays and power outages are possible due to falling trees and strong wind gusts. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and avoid travel during peak storm activity this afternoon.
Stay indoors during severe weather, keep weather radios on, and monitor updates from local emergency management and the National Weather Service. Severe conditions are expected to gradually weaken after 7 p.m., but lingering showers and gusty winds may persist into the evening.
