Columbia, SC – Early morning travelers across South Carolina’s eastern Midlands should be cautious, as dense fog is expected to reduce visibility to a quarter-mile or less until 7 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia has issued a Dense Fog Advisory, warning drivers on major routes, including I-20 and local roadways, to exercise extra caution and allow extra time for commutes.

According to the NWS, patchy dense fog may linger outside the advisory area as well, increasing the risk of accidents in reduced visibility conditions. Motorists are advised to use low-beam headlights and drive slowly. Additionally, it’s recommended to maintain a safe distance between vehicles, especially on high-speed roadways where visibility could drop suddenly.

After the fog clears, Columbia and the Midlands are expected to see sunny skies and a high of 71°F by the afternoon. Winds will be light, moving northeast at around 6 mph. The clear conditions should continue overnight with temperatures dropping to around 45°F.

Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring more sunshine with a high near 61°F, followed by increasing cloud cover in the evening. Showers are likely to develop Thursday, with rain chances around 70%, particularly in the morning and afternoon. By Friday, skies will clear again, making way for a dry and sunny weekend, with temperatures expected to hover around the high 60s on Saturday.

Stay alert to changing weather conditions this morning, and check local traffic updates for delays related to fog. With the forecast predicting a mix of sun and occasional rain later in the week, Midlands residents are encouraged to plan accordingly for their outdoor and travel plans.
