Columbia, SC – A freeze warning is in effect tonight across central South Carolina, with temperatures expected to plunge below 30°F. Residents and farmers are urged to take precautions to protect vulnerable crops and outdoor plants as the region faces its first significant freeze of the season.
According to the National Weather Service, clear skies and calm winds will cause temperatures to drop sharply overnight. Areas along I-77, including Columbia and surrounding towns, will experience lows around 29°F tonight and Saturday morning. Officials recommend covering sensitive plants, disconnecting garden hoses, and checking on outdoor animals.
The freeze warning marks the start of a chilly weekend for the Columbia area. Saturday morning will bring widespread frost, but sunny skies will help temperatures rebound to a high near 54°F by afternoon. Sunday offers similar conditions, with highs reaching 57°F but another frosty night dropping lows to 30°F.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast shows continued cold nights into early next week, with Monday night temperatures expected to fall as low as 25°F. Daytime highs will stay in the low 50s, offering sunny but brisk conditions for outdoor activities.
Residents should remain vigilant for frost and freezing conditions through Monday night. Prepare now by insulating exposed pipes and ensuring plants are covered before nightfall.
