South Carolina residents, especially those near Mount Pleasant, are urged to prepare for heat-related health risks as power outages continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. High temperatures reaching 90°F today and this week pose a significant danger for those still without air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), power outages are affecting cooling systems, increasing the likelihood of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The NWS warns that dizziness, heavy sweating, and nausea could indicate heat exhaustion, which, left untreated, may escalate to heat stroke. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear loose clothing, and, if necessary, seek medical attention immediately.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the mid-80s throughout the week, with minimal relief at night, as lows dip to just 68°F. The NWS advises all residents to remain vigilant, especially those along U.S. 17, and to check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling shelters remain available, and those experiencing symptoms of heat stroke should dial 911 immediately.
