Spartanburg, SC – Motorists are being urged to use extreme caution this morning as black ice poses a significant hazard on local roads. With temperatures dipping into the teens, shaded and secondary roads across Spartanburg and surrounding areas could become dangerously slick.
According to the National Weather Service, a Special Weather Statement has been issued for Spartanburg and neighboring counties warning of patchy black ice through the morning hours. Drivers should slow down and allow extra space between vehicles to avoid accidents, especially on untreated surfaces. Black ice can appear as wet patches, making it difficult to spot until it’s too late.
The high for Thursday is expected to reach 39°F under mostly cloudy skies, but calm winds will do little to melt remaining icy spots. Overnight, lows will drop again to 21°F, raising the risk of black ice returning on Friday morning.
Looking ahead, Friday will bring sunny skies and a high near 43°F, offering some relief from the bitter cold. Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be sunny and mild, with highs of 46°F and 52°F respectively, making for a pleasant weekend. Rain chances return briefly on Monday morning with temperatures warming into the mid-50s.
Travelers should plan ahead, avoid speeding, and remain vigilant for icy patches on major roadways, especially secondary streets and bridges. Emergency services advise against unnecessary travel until temperatures rise later in the day.
