Greenville, S.C. – Residents across Upstate South Carolina should limit outdoor activity Monday as unhealthy air quality grips the region from late morning through early evening.

According to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, a Code Orange Ozone Action Day will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for areas including Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Rock Hill. The alert signals that ground-level ozone levels may reach concentrations unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with lung conditions.

Communities such as Laurens, Chester, Gaffney, and Easley are urged to reduce prolonged outdoor exertion during peak hours. Activities like jogging, yardwork, or outdoor sports should be rescheduled or moved indoors, especially between noon and 6 p.m. where ozone tends to spike.

To help reduce pollution, officials recommend carpooling, biking, avoiding drive-thrus, and minimizing idling. Keeping vehicles maintained and limiting energy use can also ease ozone formation during warm, stagnant weather conditions like Monday’s.

Air quality is expected to improve overnight, but another alert may be issued if weather conditions persist into Tuesday.
