Myrtle Beach, SC – An Air Quality Alert remains in effect for Horry County as wildfire smoke continues to impact the region, according to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES). Residents are urged to take precautions as fine particulate levels may reach unhealthy standards.
According to SCDES, persistent high pressure over the Southeast U.S. is preventing smoke dispersion from multiple wildfires in the area. The stagnant air conditions, coupled with light winds, will keep smoke concentrated, particularly during the overnight and early morning hours. This may lead to reduced visibility and poor air quality, especially in Myrtle Beach, Conway, and surrounding communities.
Health officials advise that individuals with respiratory conditions, including asthma and chronic lung disease, should limit outdoor exposure. Residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed, use air conditioning with fresh-air intakes closed, and ensure indoor air filters are clean to minimize smoke infiltration.
Those in areas closer to active wildfire activity are likely to experience heavier smoke at times. The alert will remain in effect until further notice as authorities monitor air quality levels.
