South Bend, Indiana – Rain will steadily expand north toward South Bend by 3 p.m. Wednesday, and drivers along US-31 and I-80 should expect wet pavement in time for the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, not all communities will see rain early Wednesday, but coverage increases through the afternoon and continues overnight. Temperatures will climb into the upper 40s to near 50 degrees Wednesday, allowing for plain rain rather than any frozen precipitation.

By Wednesday evening, steady rainfall is likely across St. Joseph and Elkhart counties, with the highest coverage north of US-20 and along the Indiana Toll Road. While rainfall amounts are not expected to be excessive at first, persistent showers could create ponding on I-94 and low-lying stretches of IN-23 during heavier bursts.

Rain continues into Thursday, when the probability of precipitation rises to near 90 percent across northern Indiana. Highs Thursday will reach the lower to mid-50s, keeping conditions damp and mild. Repeated rounds of rain may slow travel during both the morning and evening commutes, particularly where drainage systems remain clogged by winter debris.

Motorists should allow extra following distance on wet highways and watch for standing water on exit ramps and underpasses. Pedestrians should also prepare for reduced visibility during heavier showers.

Rain chances gradually taper later Thursday, but additional unsettled weather remains possible into the end of the week. Further updates may be issued as rainfall coverage becomes more widespread.
