Philadelphia, PA – A winter storm is set to hit Philadelphia and surrounding areas starting Sunday, bringing heavy snow, icy roads, and dangerously cold temperatures. Residents should prepare for travel disruptions and extreme cold lasting through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mount Holly, snowfall will begin early Sunday morning, intensifying throughout the day. Accumulation rates may exceed 1 inch per hour during the heaviest periods, with total snow accumulations of 4–6 inches expected in the city and surrounding areas. Mixed precipitation, including freezing rain, could worsen travel conditions, particularly on untreated roads.

Sunday night will mark the beginning of an arctic blast, with wind chills plummeting to below zero. The coldest conditions are forecast for Monday night through Wednesday morning, with lows dipping to single digits and wind chills as low as -10°F. Officials warn of increased risks of frostbite and hypothermia.

Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel, particularly along I-95, where visibility and road conditions may deteriorate rapidly. The NWS advises preparing vehicles with emergency kits and ensuring homes are equipped with proper heating and supplies to weather the extreme cold.

The winter weather will persist into midweek, with lingering snow showers and freezing temperatures expected. Residents are encouraged to stay updated by visiting weather.gov for the latest alerts and advisories.
