Grand Junction, CO – A powerful winter storm is bringing significant snowfall across Colorado, making travel along I-70 dangerous through Wednesday. Accumulations could reach up to 36 inches in higher elevations, with blizzard-like conditions in some areas.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region, effective through midnight Wednesday. Expect heavy snow and wind gusts up to 40 mph, significantly reducing visibility. The most impacted areas include the Gore and Elk Mountains, Vail Pass, and stretches of I-70, where total snow accumulations could reach 24 inches or more.

According to the NWS, hazardous road conditions are likely to disrupt both Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Officials advise against unnecessary travel, especially in higher mountain passes, where near-whiteout conditions could leave vehicles stranded. Travelers should carry emergency kits, including flashlights, food, and water.

Looking ahead, the storm will taper off by late Wednesday, but another system may arrive Saturday, bringing light snow to the foothills. Temperatures will remain frigid, with daytime highs in the low 30s and overnight lows dipping into the teens. Thanksgiving Day is forecast to stay dry, offering a brief respite for holiday travelers.

For those venturing out, keep a close eye on road updates via the Colorado Department of Transportation by dialing 511 or checking cotrip.org. Emergency responders warn of potential delays on I-70, Highway 550 near Ridgway, and other major mountain routes.

Plan accordingly to avoid peak travel times and prioritize safety during this disruptive weather event.
