Chicago, IL – Snowfall is expected to accumulate across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana through early evening Friday, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a special weather statement early Friday morning, forecasting 1 to 3 inches of snow for areas along and southeast of I-55. Slippery roads and reduced visibility are anticipated as snowfall continues throughout the day.

According to the NWS, snowfall began spreading into the region overnight and will intensify during the morning commute. Cities such as Chicago, Naperville, Joliet, and Gary, Indiana, are likely to see significant accumulation. The weather service urges residents to slow down and leave extra space between vehicles while driving.

“Snow can quickly create hazardous conditions on untreated roads,” the NWS warned in its advisory. Motorists are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.

This winter weather event marks one of the first significant snowfalls of the season for the region. Local authorities are deploying plows and salt trucks to mitigate road hazards, particularly on highways and major intersections.

The snowfall is expected to taper off by evening, with lighter flurries possible into the night. However, temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing, which could cause lingering icy spots on roadways.

Residents are advised to monitor updates from local officials and the NWS for further information. Travel plans should be adjusted as needed to prioritize safety.
