Springfield, IL – A winter storm has blanketed much of central Illinois with heavy snowfall, causing hazardous road conditions across the region. Snowfall totals range from 8 to 12 inches in areas like Pana, Taylorville, and Effingham, creating challenges for Monday evening commuters.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall accumulations peaked at 11.5 inches in Pana and 9.5 inches in Dawson. Roadways, including I-72 and I-55, are particularly treacherous due to refreezing precipitation, with authorities urging drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling. Additionally, blowing snow and low visibility remain concerns into the evening.
The weather isn’t over yet. Tuesday will bring partly sunny skies with highs near 23°F, but icy conditions are expected to persist due to overnight lows dropping into the single digits. By midweek, temperatures will stabilize, with mostly sunny skies forecast for Wednesday and highs near 19°F. However, a chance of additional snow is expected Friday afternoon, so travelers should remain vigilant.
Looking ahead, conditions will remain cold and dry into the weekend, with temperatures reaching the mid-20s by Saturday. Residents are encouraged to check local forecasts regularly and prepare for prolonged freezing conditions.
Travelers should monitor road conditions through Illinois 511 and plan for delays. As cleanup efforts continue, residents are also reminded to shovel sidewalks and check on neighbors who may need assistance with snow removal or cold weather preparations.
