Pittsburgh, PA – Snow squalls and rapidly changing weather conditions are expected to hit parts of Pennsylvania this afternoon, creating dangerous travel conditions through early Thursday. A cold front is driving the transition from rain to snow, with temperatures dropping below freezing tonight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pittsburgh, the risk of snow squalls will increase between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Thursday. These isolated bursts of heavy snow could reduce visibility to near zero, leading to whiteout conditions. Drivers should remain alert on major roadways, including Interstate 79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, where conditions could change rapidly.
While snow accumulation along roads may remain limited due to warm ground temperatures, grassy areas and elevated surfaces could see a quick coating. Wind gusts accompanying the cold front may worsen visibility during squalls.
The NWS advises travelers to delay non-essential trips, prepare emergency kits, and monitor local weather alerts. If caught in a squall, slow down, avoid sudden stops, and increase following distance.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring highs near 27°F with wind chills dropping to the single digits by night. Partly sunny skies will return Friday, but low temperatures will linger through the weekend.
